Summer wellness in the
HimmelReich spa

Relaxation beneath ancient sandstone arches

The Palatinate summer shines hot and golden, and behind the mighty monastery walls of Kloster Hornbach, a cool, feel-good world of sandstone and caring hands awaits you. Sanitas per aquam, as the Romans would say.

Do you associate wellness with autumn days and winter evenings? With an open fire, candlelight, and steaming infusions in the cool air? That’s understandable. But we’d like to tell you why the height of summer in the Palatinate also provides the perfect setting for wonderful wellness sessions at Kloster Hornbach. Outside, summer caresses the old monastery walls, while inside, beneath the historic Nikolaus Tower, the centuries-old sandstone vault of the HimmelReich wellness area offers you a cosily cool haven of well-being.

There are biological reasons why summer heat makes you happy. Sunlight stimulates the production of serotonin in your body – a neurotransmitter whose name derives from the Latin ‘serum’, meaning blood serum, and which is sure to put you in a good mood. Add a carefully measured dose of sauna heat to this, and your blood vessels dilate, your circulation gets going, and a dip into the cool water of the relaxation pool acts as a refreshing boost for your whole body.

Two summer treatments that we particularly recommend:

  • Full-body herbal stamp massage. Upstairs in the old schoolhouse, our spa specialists will glide warm, fragrant herbal compresses over your back. The massage detoxifies the body and nourishes the skin, while our special, home-made herbal blends transport you into a world of unique scents. There are three options to choose from:
    • invigorating herbs including rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint, and camomile
      • soothing herbs including lemon balm, lavender flowers, and camomile
      • citrus dream including orange peel, lemon peel, lemongrass, lemon balm, and camomile.
  • Beautiful feet for the summer. Your feet deserve some extra care, especially during the sandal and barefoot season. To start with, you can relax in a warm foot bath, followed by a gentle oil scrub that leaves your skin velvety smooth. The foot and calf massage that follows relaxes your muscles, leaving you feeling light on your feet and full of energy as you stride through the summer.

Back beneath the sandstone arches, the relaxation pool – heated to around 30 degrees – awaits you, complemented by a Finnish sauna and an experience shower with changing lighting effects. Outside, the golden Palatinate summer; inside, cool sandstone and the prospect of a glass of Riesling in the Klosterhof: the Romans called it otium cum dignitate – dignified leisure. We think it’s a wonderful idea.
